What happens when Max meets Nikola Tesla?
Max steps into Tesla’s laboratory and gets a quick lesson in alternating current (AC). Naturally, Max decides that hearing the explanation isn’t quite enough. ⚡
Nikola Tesla (1856–1943) was a Serbian-American inventor and electrical engineer whose work helped shape the modern alternating-current power system. His inventions and experiments included important advances involving AC motors, polyphase power, transformers, high-frequency electricity, and wireless technologies.
So what exactly is alternating current?
Electric current is the movement of electric charge. With direct current (DC), current flows primarily in one direction. With alternating current (AC), the direction of current periodically reverses — back and forth. In the United States, the electrical grid typically operates at 60 Hz, meaning the AC waveform completes 60 cycles every second.
AC became fundamental to electric power distribution because transformers allow AC voltage to be efficiently stepped up for long-distance transmission and stepped down again for use in homes and businesses. Tesla’s work on polyphase AC systems and induction motors was an important part of the development of practical AC power technology.
Max learns the first part pretty quickly.
The second part, he learns the Max way. ⚡
