How the Exploit Works
The vulnerability lies in the /admin/campsdetails.php file of the Blood Bank Management System 1.0. The flaw arises due to inadequate sanitization of the ‘hospital’ argument, which can be manipulated by an attacker to execute arbitrary SQL commands. This type of attack, known as SQL injection, allows an attacker to manipulate the database, potentially leading to unauthorized access, data corruption, or even a system shutdown.
Conceptual Example Code
Below is a conceptual example of how this vulnerability could be exploited. This example depicts a malicious SQL statement injected into the ‘hospital’ argument.
POST /admin/campsdetails.php HTTP/1.1
Host: target.example.com
Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
hospital=' OR '1'='1'; DROP TABLE members; --
In this example, the SQL injection payload ‘` OR ‘1’=’1′; DROP TABLE members; — ` will cause the server to execute the DROP TABLE command if the SQL query is not properly sanitized, potentially leading to significant data loss.
Mitigation and Recommendations
Affected users are advised to apply the vendor patch as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can be used as temporary mitigation. These systems should be configured to detect and block SQL injection attempts. Additionally, it is recommended to restrict access to the vulnerable application until the patch is applied.
