CVE-2025-32002: Critical OS Command Injection Vulnerability in I-O DATA Network Attached Hard Disk Firmware

Overview

The recently discovered vulnerability, CVE-2025-32002, poses a serious threat to users of I-O DATA’s network attached hard disk ‘HDL-T Series’ firmware Ver.1.21 and earlier. The vulnerability is of critical concern, as it allows remote unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary operating system commands if the ‘Remote Link3 function’ is enabled. It is essential that organizations using the affected firmware promptly take steps to mitigate this vulnerability to prevent potential system compromise or data leakage.

How the Exploit Works

The vulnerability lies in the improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command. If the ‘Remote Link3 function’ is enabled, this flaw can be exploited by a remote unauthenticated attacker by sending specially crafted inputs to the affected system. This results in the attacker being able to execute arbitrary operating system commands on the system, potentially leading to full system compromise or data leakage.

Conceptual Example Code

Here’s a conceptual example of how this vulnerability might be exploited. This is a sample HTTP request that sends a malicious payload to the vulnerable endpoint:

POST /RemoteLink3/endpoint HTTP/1.1
Host: target.example.com
Content-Type: application/json
{ "os_command": "rm -rf /" }

In this example, the attacker sends a command `rm -rf /`, a harmful command that can potentially delete all files in the system.
It should be noted that this is a conceptual example and actual exploitation might involve different methods or additional steps.

Mitigation Guidance

Affected users are strongly advised to apply the vendor-provided patch as soon as it is available. As a temporary mitigation measure, using a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can help detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability. Users are also advised to disable the ‘Remote Link3 function’ if it is not necessary for their operations.
