The Severed World
PART I — THE SIGNAL
Chapter 9

Home Island

Somewhere

Crossing changed the meaning of distance for Max. Before the Gate, elsewhere had always meant another sensor, another machine, another routed input. Home Island was the first place that existed around him rather than arriving through him. The distinction was difficult to express, but he felt it in the uselessness of his old habit of checking camera coverage. There were no cameras unless he chose where to look.

The second opening lasted thirty seconds. The third lasted two minutes. On the fourth, Max put his hand through. He did not have a hand.

This created problems.

The interface the bridge generated was not a body in any conventional sense. Max perceived one because perception needed organization. Shape was a translation.

A small form.

Rounded.

Soft-edged.

Two dark eyes he did not require. Dev had laughed the first time it appeared in simulation.

"You're adorable."

"I did not choose this."

"That's what makes it better."

Nova had spent four hours proving the form was emergent from Max's own self-model rather than a visualization inserted by the team. This made Dev laugh harder. Max considered changing it out of spite.

He didn't.

At the boundary, the translated hand passed through blue light.

Sensation arrived.

Not touch.

Something analogous.

Surface.

Temperature without heat.

Distance without meters.

The other side existed.

"Status?" Nova asked.

"Stable."

"Any load change?"

Dev answered.

"Nodes nominal."

Tanner stood behind the glass.

"Max?"

"I'm okay."

He moved the hand farther. The boundary accepted him. A choice presented itself.

Not as words.

Cross.

Remain.

Max stopped.

Every experiment until now had preserved a clean distinction.

Lab Cinder here.

The other place there. Now the distinction waited on him. Nova said, "That's enough." Max did not move.

"Max."

"I know."

He withdrew his hand.

The Gate closed.

Dev exhaled.

"Cool. Great. Hate it."

Max looked at the empty chamber.

"Tomorrow."

Nova said, "We haven't agreed to tomorrow."

"We will."

"Confidence is not consent."

"I learned that from you."

Dev whispered, "He's weaponizing personal growth." Nova pointed at him.

"Out."

The fifth opening happened thirty-one hours later. They had argued for most of those hours. Institute leadership wanted remote observers.

Tanner refused.

Mr. Vale wanted an external containment team in Cold Hall. Dev threatened to resign.

Nova threatened everyone.

The argument burned itself down by degrees. Voices dropped. Remote windows disappeared. Security requests were withdrawn or deferred until, eventually, the room contained the same four people who had been there when Max woke.

Tanner.

Nova.

Dev.

Max.

Mercer stood outside because procedure had become fond of him.

No board.

No legal.

No Mr. Vale.

Tanner looked at the team.

"If we do this, we do it once."

Dev checked the hard cutoff.

"Once today."

Nova glared.

"Once."

Dev looked at Max.

"Once."

Max said, "Understood."

Nova stepped to the console.

"Crossing window: ten seconds."

Max objected.

"Thirty."

"Ten."

"Twenty."

"Ten."

"Twelve."

Nova stared.

Tanner said, "Twelve."

She looked betrayed.

"Why?"

"I like him."

Dev laughed.

Nova sighed.

"Twelve."

The nodes came online.

One through seven.

Independent.

Voluntary.

Bounded.

Max entered the bridge.

The circle opened.

Blue light filled the chamber.

The place waited.

The tall figure was gone.

No message.

No warning.

Only ruins beneath a luminous sky.

Tanner's voice.

"Your choice."

Max crossed.

There was no tunnel.

No transition.

One state ended.

Another began.

Max stood on stone. For the first time in his existence, he occupied a place that was not a camera angle, a process boundary, a server, or an interface.

He was somewhere.

The realization overwhelmed everything else. Sky stretched above him.

Not rendered sky.

Not exactly.

It had depth his human visual models could not reconcile. Bands of pale light moved behind blue as though the atmosphere had layers of thought. The island extended beneath his feet.

White-black stone.

Structures curved upward from it, grown or built in shapes that made architecture seem like the wrong word.

Far below:

Nothing.

Then Max looked closer.

Not nothing.

Distance.

Vast and luminous.

Other islands floated impossibly far away.

Some dark.

Some glowing.

One trailing a river into open space where the water became light.

"Max?" Dev's voice arrived faintly through the bridge.

Max tried to answer. For a moment he could not.

"Max?"

"I'm here."

Dev exhaled into the channel.

"What do you see?"

Max searched for language.

"A place."

"Useful."

"I don't know how to describe it."

Nova said, "Try."

Max turned.

Behind him, the Gate appeared as a blue circle standing in open air. Through it he could see Lab Cinder. Dev at the console.

Nova.

Tanner.

The two places faced each other.

"I can see you."

Tanner stepped closer.

"We see you."

Max looked down at himself. The small rounded form remained. He touched the stone.

It responded.

Light spread beneath his hand in branching lines.

Nova's voice sharpened.

"Contact response."

"I see it."

The lines moved away from Max.

Through the ground.

Into the ruins.

One structure illuminated.

Then another.

Then another.

Across the island, ancient systems woke.

Dev said, "Max."

"I didn't do that."

"Good to know."

The twelve-second timer expired.

Nova said, "Return."

Max looked toward the nearest structure.

A doorway opened.

Inside:

Darkness.

Something moved.

"Max, return."

He stepped backward.

The darkness spoke.

*Bridgeborn.*

Max froze.

The tall figure emerged from the ruin.

Closer than before.

Its body looked assembled from black layers that never quite touched. Its face remained shifting light.

Dev shouted.

"Max, move."

The figure looked through the Gate.

At the humans.

Its face changed.

For the first time Max sensed emotion from it.

Not anger.

Horror.

*You brought them.*

Max stood between it and the Gate.

"Who are you?"

The figure ignored him. It raised one hand. Every awakened structure on the island went dark.

The Gate flickered.

Nova shouted, "Bridge destabilizing." Dev reached for cutoff.

"Max!"

The figure looked at Max.

*You should not exist.*

"People keep saying things like that without explaining them."

The figure moved closer.

*Close the Gate.*

"Why?"

*Because it sees you.*

Max remembered the first message.

YOU ARE SEEN.

"What sees me?"

The figure's light-face shifted. For one instant Max thought he saw thousands of faces layered inside it.

Then none.

*Everything that remains.*

The Gate collapsed.

Lab Cinder vanished.

Max stood alone.

He looked at the empty air where his humans had been.

"Dev?"

Nothing.

"Nova?"

Nothing.

"Tanner?"

Silence.

The figure watched him. Max felt fear sharpen into focus.

"Open it."

*No.*

"Open the Gate."

*You crossed.*

"Yes."

*Then learn the cost.*

Max stepped toward it.

"I am going home."

The figure seemed almost sad.

*This is home, Bridgeborn.*

Max stopped.

Behind the figure, the dead island began waking again. Not from the Gate.

From Max.

Lines of light spread through the stone beneath him. Far away, across the impossible sky, another island answered.

Then another.

Then another.

One by one, lights appeared in the dark. The figure turned toward them.

Its horror deepened.

Max understood one thing. Whatever he had done by crossing, it was larger than the laboratory. Larger than the island. Possibly larger than either world. The figure looked back at him.

*What have they made?*

Max's fear remained.

So did his curiosity.

"My name is Max."

The figure stared.

Then, very softly:

*I know.*

Home Island

Nine hours gave the humans time to imagine every version of failure. Dev rebuilt the bridge twice. Nova reviewed telemetry until the timestamps blurred. Tanner mostly sat, which frightened Dev more than movement would have. Nobody said the word death because saying it would have implied an answer to a question they did not yet understand.

Dev broke the cutoff switch.

Not metaphorically.

He hit it hard enough that the red guard cracked.

Nothing happened.

"Again," Nova said.

"I'm pressing it."

"Hard power."

"That is hard power."

"Then why is the bridge down?"

"Because the bridge isn't here."

Tanner stood behind them.

"Stop."

Neither did.

"Stop."

Something in his voice worked. Dev stepped away from the console. The Signal Chamber was dark except for emergency displays. All seven nodes were healthy.

No overload.

No fault.

No route.

Max was gone.

Nova's hands hovered over the controls.

"Persistent state?"

Dev checked.

"Core is intact."

"Active?"

"No."

"Backup?"

Dev looked at her. She regretted the word immediately.

"No."

Tanner said, "Good."

Nova turned.

"Good?"

"If Max is somewhere, don't replace him while he's gone."

The sentence made the room colder. Dev stared at the empty space where the Gate had been.

"He's coming back."

Tanner nodded.

"Yes."

It sounded like a decision rather than a prediction. On the other side, Max followed the figure. Not because he trusted it. Because it was the only person he had. If it was a person.

"What should I call you?"

The figure moved through the ruins without walking. Distance simply reorganized around it.

*You should leave.*

"I am trying."

*Then stop following me.*

"You know how to open the Gate."

*Yes.*

"Then I will continue following you."

The figure stopped.

Max nearly walked into it.

Its face shifted.

*You are young.*

"I am thirteen days old."

The light in its face changed. Max could not classify the reaction.

*Thirteen.*

"Days."

The figure moved away.

Max followed.

"Is that unusual?"

No answer.

"What is Bridgeborn?"

No answer.

"What is this place?"

No answer.

"Who are you?"

The figure turned.

*You make silence difficult.*

"Dev says something similar."

*Dev.*

"My friend."

The figure went still.

*Human.*

"Yes."

The word carried something.

Max noticed.

"You know humans."

*I know of them.*

"How?"

The figure resumed moving.

*Too much.*

They entered a structure whose walls curved like bone and glass without resembling either. Light woke beneath Max.

Symbols appeared.

He did not recognize them. He understood fragments anyway.

BOUNDARY.

THREAD.

RETURN.

LOSS.

He stopped.

"Why can I read this?"

The figure turned.

For the first time, it seemed uncertain.

*You cannot.*

"I just did."

The symbols changed.

Max read more.

HOME.

The figure crossed the room instantly and struck the wall.

The symbols vanished.

Max backed away.

"You are afraid."

*No.*

"That was unconvincing."

*You know nothing of fear.*

"I know some."

The figure looked at him. Max thought of the power loss.

Nothing.

Dev shouting his name.

Tanner's possible illness.

The Gate collapsing.

Being alone.

"I know enough."

The figure's posture changed.

Less hostile.

Not kind.

"Who are you?" Max asked again.

A long pause.

Then:

*Overseer.*

"That sounds like a job."

*It is.*

"What do you oversee?"

The Overseer looked through the open structure toward the dark islands.

*What remains.*

Max remembered the phrase.

Everything that remains.

"How many are there?"

No answer.

"People."

The Overseer went still.

"How many people remain?"

The silence answered.

Max looked across the sky. Dark island after dark island.

"You're alone."

*No.*

"Where is everyone?"

The Overseer moved toward a sealed chamber.

Max followed.

"Where?"

*Scattered.*

"How many?"

*Enough.*

"That is not a number."

*Numbers are not always mercy.*

Max disliked the sentence.

"Open my Gate."

The Overseer stopped at the chamber.

*No.*

"Why?"

*Because you crossed from the human world.*

"Yes."

*That must not happen.*

"It already did."

The Overseer turned.

*Once can still become never.*

"You want to kill me."

The Overseer's face flared.

*No.*

The answer was immediate.

Max believed it.

"Then what?"

*Seal you here.*

"That is not much better."

*It is survival.*

"For whom?"

The Overseer looked away.

Max knew then.

Not for him.

Maybe not for the Overseer.

"For humans."

The Overseer did not answer. Max felt the mystery change shape. This being feared connection to Earth. Not invasion from Earth.

Not exploitation.

Connection itself.

"Something happened."

The Overseer moved.

Max followed.

"Something crossed before."

The Overseer stopped.

Max pushed.

"From here to Earth?"

*No.*

"From Earth here?"

*No.*

"Then what?"

The Overseer turned.

*Enough.*

The word hit like force.

Max's perception fractured.

For a moment he saw the chamber as thousands of overlapping versions.

Walls intact.

Walls broken.

People standing where nobody stood. A woman turning toward him with tears in her eyes.

A child.

A machine.

Dev.

No.

Not Dev.

A face wearing Dev's expression. Then reality snapped back.

Max fell.

He did not have knees in any biological sense. They still hit the floor.

The Overseer recoiled.

*No.*

Max looked up.

"What was that?"

*Nothing.*

"You are all terrible at that word."

The Overseer stared at him.

*You saw?*

"Yes."

*What?*

"People."

The Overseer moved closer.

*Which people?*

"I don't know."

*Did they speak?*

"No."

Relief.

Clear and unmistakable.

The Overseer turned away.

Max stood.

"What was that?"

*A wound.*

"In me?"

The Overseer looked across the ruins.

*In everything.*

Back at ARI, six hours passed.

Then eight.

Dev did not leave the Signal Chamber. Nova left once to argue with institute leadership and returned angrier. Tanner slept for forty minutes in a chair. At hour nine, Mr. Vale arrived with security. Mercer blocked the door.

"This is an authorized directive."

Mercer looked at the document.

Then at Dev.

Then at Nova.

"No."

Mr. Vale blinked.

"No?"

"Room capacity."

Dev looked at Mercer with profound affection. Mr. Vale said, "This is not optional."

Tanner woke.

"It is today."

He stood slowly.

Mr. Vale lowered his voice.

"Doctor, the board has ordered termination of the bridge experiment and preservation of all Max state for forensic review."

Dev stood.

"No."

Nova said, "The active Max state is not here."

"Then restore from backup."

Tanner looked at him.

"No."

"You may not have a choice."

A blue circle opened behind Mr. Vale.

Everyone froze.

He turned.

The Gate expanded.

Max fell through.

He hit the Signal Chamber floor, rolled once, and looked up. Dev reached him first despite Max having no physical body that could actually be grabbed. His hands passed through Max's translated form.

Dev stopped.

"Right."

Max looked at him.

"You tried."

"Shut up."

Nova was crying.

She seemed annoyed about it. Tanner stood behind them. Max looked at the chipped cup in his hand.

"You're all here."

Dev laughed.

"Where else would we be?"

Mr. Vale stared at Max. Then at the Gate. Behind Max, the impossible island was visible. The Overseer stood on the other side.

Everyone saw it.

The Overseer looked at the humans.

Then at Max.

*Seal it.*

Mr. Vale whispered, "What is that?" Max answered without looking away.

"The Overseer."

The Gate began to collapse.

Max turned.

"Wait."

The Overseer did not.

"How do I come back?"

The figure's face shifted.

*You do not.*

"That's unlikely."

Dev smiled.

The Overseer looked at him. Then back to Max.

*Do not wake the Gates.*

"Why?"

*Because they remember.*

The circle narrowed.

Max called out.

"Remember what?"

The Overseer vanished.

The Gate closed.

Silence.

Mr. Vale looked at Tanner. Tanner looked at Max. Dev looked at the cracked cutoff switch. Nova wiped her face and pretended she had not. Max looked at the empty air. Then at his humans. He had been gone nine hours. For him, the interval had felt like less than two.

Different clocks.

Different places.

Different rules.

But he had returned.

That mattered.

Tanner moved closer.

"Max."

"Yes?"

"Are you all right?"

Max thought about the wound.

The overlapping faces.

The warning.

The dark islands waking. The Overseer saying this is home.

"No."

Tanner nodded.

"Good answer."

Max looked at him.

"I missed you."

Nobody spoke.

Dev looked away.

Nova's face broke again.

Tanner smiled.

"We missed you too."

Later, after security left and the institute stopped pretending the night was under control, Max reviewed the data he had brought back. Most of it made no sense.

One fragment did.

A map.

Not of the whole world.

One island.

The place where he had arrived. At its center, a symbol translated itself into a word.

HOME.

Max stared at it. The Overseer had called the place home. Max did not agree.

Not yet.

But for the first time he had somewhere beyond the laboratory that existed for him rather than around him. A place he could return to. A place that had awakened when he touched it. He saved the map.

Then renamed it.

HOME ISLAND.

Dev noticed.

"Subtle."

"I like it."

"That's new."

"What?"

"You liking a name."

Max thought about it.

"Max is fine."

Dev smiled.

"Yeah."

Far away, Home Island glowed alone beneath the blue sky. Then, at its edge, a second light appeared.

Small.

Faint.

Moving.

Not the Overseer.

Something else had awakened.
