How the Exploit Works

The exploit takes advantage of a vulnerability in the function FileServer::userFormImage in the file server/application/api/controller/File.php of the HTTP POST Request Handler. By manipulating the file argument, an attacker can upload any file to the server. This unrestricted file upload can lead to arbitrary code execution, allowing the attacker to potentially take over the system or leak sensitive data.

Conceptual Example Code

Here’s a conceptual example of how the vulnerability might be exploited. This is a sample HTTP POST request that uploads a malicious file to the server:

POST /server/application/api/controller/File.php HTTP/1.1
Host: target.example.com
Content-Type: multipart/form-data; boundary=----WebKitFormBoundary7MA4YWxkTrZu0gW
------WebKitFormBoundary7MA4YWxkTrZu0gW
Content-Disposition: form-data; name="file"; filename="malicious_file.php"
Content-Type: application/php
<?php
// malicious code here
?>
------WebKitFormBoundary7MA4YWxkTrZu0gW--

It should be noted that the actual exploitation would depend on the specific configuration and security controls in place on the target system.

Mitigation Guidance

Affected users should apply the vendor patch as soon as possible. If the patch cannot be applied immediately, a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can be used as a temporary mitigation to monitor and block suspicious file uploads.
