How the Exploit Works
The vulnerability exists within the function setDiagnosisCfg of the file /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi. An attacker can manipulate the ‘ip’ argument to inject operating system commands. These commands are then executed by the system, granting the attacker the ability to compromise the system or potentially exfiltrate data.
Conceptual Example Code
The following is a conceptual example of how the vulnerability might be exploited. This example shows an HTTP request where the ‘ip’ argument is manipulated to inject a malicious OS command:
POST /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi HTTP/1.1
Host: target.example.com
Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
function=setDiagnosisCfg&ip=127.0.0.1;%20malicious_os_command
This command would result in the system executing the ‘malicious_os_command’ after setting the diagnosis configuration.
Recommended Mitigation
It’s recommended that users apply the vendor’s patch once it becomes available. Until then, a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can be used as a temporary mitigation to block or detect attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
