How the Exploit Works

The vulnerability stems from an integer overflow within the AMD NPU Driver. An integer overflow can occur when an arithmetic operation attempts to create a numeric value that is outside of the range that can be represented with a given number of bits. If a local attacker can manipulate the data being processed in such a way as to cause an overflow, they can cause the system to write data beyond the intended boundary. This could allow for unauthorized modification of critical system data or potentially trigger a system crash leading to a loss of availability.

Conceptual Example Code

Here’s a conceptual example of how the vulnerability could be exploited. This pseudo-code represents a local attacker manipulating data to cause an integer overflow:

In this conceptual example, the attacker is writing an extremely large value to a file used by the AMD NPU driver. This could potentially cause an integer overflow, allowing the attacker to write data beyond the intended boundary.
