How the Exploit Works
The vulnerability is located in the formSetWAN_Wizard52 function of D-Link DIR-619L 2.04B04. An attacker can trigger a buffer overflow by manipulating the ‘curTime’ argument in the function call. Buffer overflow vulnerabilities occur when a program writes more data to a fixed-length block of memory, or buffer, than it can hold. The extra data can overwrite adjacent memory, leading to erratic program behavior, crashes, or even the execution of malicious code. In this case, an attacker could leverage the overflow to gain control over the system or extract sensitive data.
Conceptual Example Code
While we do not have the exact code, an example of how this vulnerability might be exploited is provided below. In this hypothetical scenario, an attacker sends a specially crafted HTTP request to the router’s WAN settings page, overloading the buffer with an excessive ‘curTime’ value.
POST /formSetWAN_Wizard52 HTTP/1.1
Host: target_router_ip
Content-Type: application/json
{ "curTime": "A long string of text to trigger a buffer overflow..." }
The above is a conceptual example and may not reflect the exact method an attacker would use to exploit this vulnerability. It is shared merely for illustrative and educational purposes.
Please note that the vendor has been notified of this vulnerability, and users are urged to apply the vendor patch or use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) as a temporary mitigation measure.
