This lack of sanitization allows for the injection of malicious OS commands. An attacker can manipulate this argument remotely, resulting in execution of arbitrary commands on the system with the privileges of the web server.

Conceptual Example Code

An example of how the vulnerability might be exploited could be a malicious HTTP POST request to the vulnerable endpoint. The FileName argument can be manipulated to include OS commands which get executed on the server. It might look something like this:

POST /cgi-bin/cstecgi.cgi HTTP/1.1
Host: target.example.com
Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
UploadFirmwareFile=;+rm+-rf+/+&FileName=malicious_firmware.bin

In this example, the command `rm -rf /` will be executed on the server, deleting all files on the system. This is purely a conceptual example and does not represent a real-world scenario.

Recommendations

Users of the affected software are advised to apply the vendor patch as soon as possible. If the vendor patch is not available, temporary mitigation can be achieved by using a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability.

Overview A critical vulnerability, identified as CVE-2024-0297, has been discovered in Totolink N200RE 9.3.5u.6139_B20201216 firmware.
