This incorrect handling can lead to a segmentation fault, causing the Suricata process to crash. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending specially crafted network packets that trigger the incorrect behavior, leading to potential system compromise or data leakage.

Conceptual Example Code

Below is a conceptual example of a network packet that could potentially exploit this vulnerability. If updating is not immediately possible, users can disable rules using the entropy keyword, or validate that they are anchored to a sticky buffer as a temporary workaround. Additionally, deploying a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can provide temporary mitigation.

Overview CVE-2025-59148 is a significant vulnerability detected in the Suricata engine, a widely deployed network Intrusion Detection System (IDS), Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), and Network Security Monitoring (NSM) tool.
