In multiple locations, it presents an authentication prompt intended for one application to the user. However, due to the logic error, the result of this authentication is then used in another application. This allows for a local escalation of privilege without requiring any additional execution privileges.

Conceptual Example Code

Here’s a conceptual example of how the vulnerability might be exploited:

POST /authenticate/app1 HTTP/1.1
Host: target.example.com
Content-Type: application/json
{ "user_credentials": "user_app1_credentials" }
// Due to the vulnerability, the authentication result is now available also to app2
GET /restricted/data/app2 HTTP/1.1
Host: target.example.com
Authentication: Bearer token_received_from_app1_auth

Mitigation

The most effective mitigation against this exploit is to apply the security patch provided by the vendor. If the patch cannot be applied immediately, using a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can serve as a temporary mitigation measure. It is recommended to always keep software up-to-date and apply patches as soon as they become available.

Overview CVE-2025-22422 is a cybersecurity vulnerability that allows potential threat actors to mislead users into approving an authentication prompt for one application, only for the result to be utilized in another.
