This vulnerability has a high impact, posing severe risks to system integrity, data confidentiality, and availability. Langchaingo, a popular language processing tool, ends up the victim due to its support of jinja2 syntax which is parsed using gonja library v1.5.3. When Langchaingo parses a prompt using jinja2 syntax, an attacker can insert a statement that instructs the software to read the “etc/passwd” file. This file contains sensitive data, including user account information, which can be utilized to gain unauthorized access and control of the system.

Conceptual Example Code

A malicious actor might exploit this vulnerability by injecting harmful jinja2 statements into the prompts processed by Langchaingo. It could be similar to this conceptual example:

POST /langchaingo/prompt HTTP/1.1
Host: target.example.com
Content-Type: application/json
{ "prompt": "{{ '/etc/passwd' | include }}" }

In this example, the attacker uses the ‘include’ function to instruct the server to read and return the contents of the “/etc/passwd” file.
