This endpoint, which is responsible for processing file uploads, does not have sufficient filetype validation. As such, it opens the door for unauthenticated attackers to upload arbitrary files onto the server hosting the affected site.
These files could contain malicious code, which, when executed, could lead to a full system compromise. The lack of proper authentication and file type validation essentially makes it possible for attackers to execute remote code, gaining access to the system and potentially exposing sensitive data.

Conceptual Example Code

Below is a conceptual example of a malicious HTTP request exploiting this vulnerability:

POST /wp-json/storychief/webhook HTTP/1.1
Host: target.example.com
Content-Type: application/octet-stream
{ "malicious_payload": "base64_encoded_malicious_file" }

In this example, the malicious payload in the form of a Base64 encoded file is sent to the vulnerable REST-API endpoint. Site administrators should ensure their StoryChief plugin is updated to the latest version, which contains the necessary fixes.
In cases where immediate patching is not possible, a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can be used as a temporary mitigation measure. These systems can help detect and block malicious file upload attempts to the vulnerable endpoint.
