An integer underflow happens when an operation causes a number to drop below its valid range. In this case, the vulnerability can be triggered when an attacker manipulates the Windows MBT Transport driver to consume more resources than it is allocated. This causes the integer underflow, which can then be exploited to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges.

Conceptual Example Code

This conceptual example demonstrates how an attacker might manipulate a system call to trigger the integer underflow.

# Arbitrary system call that interacts with the MBT Transport Driver
syscall(“MBT_Transport_Driver”, “-999999999”)

In this example, the syscall function is called with parameters that are likely to cause an integer underflow in the MBT Transport Driver. Affected users are advised to apply the patch as soon as possible. If immediate patching is not feasible, using a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can provide temporary mitigation. These systems can detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability. However, these are only temporary solutions and will not provide full protection. Patching the system is the only way to ensure full mitigation of this vulnerability.

Overview CVE-2025-47996 is a security vulnerability that affects the Windows MBT (Mobile Broadband Transport) Transport Driver.
