As such, an authenticated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ameeba.com\/blog\/cve-2025-25268-unauthenticated-adjacent-attacker-accessing-api-endpoint\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"77730\">attacker with Subscriber-level access<\/a> or above can manipulate this function to change their user type to that of an administrator. This allows them full control over the WordPress installation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ameeba.com\/blog\/cve-2025-7793-critical-vulnerability-in-tenda-fh451-leading-to-system-compromise\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"68806\">leading to potential system<\/a> compromise or data leakage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conceptual Example Code<\/strong><\/p><div id=\"ameeb-1192126902\" class=\"ameeb-content ameeb-entity-placement\"><div class=\"poptin-embedded\" data-id=\"f6b387694f681\"><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<\/div>\n<p>The following is a conceptual pseudocode example of how this vulnerability might be exploited:<\/p>\n<pre><code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">POST \/wp-admin\/user-edit.php?user_id=&lt;attacker_user_id&gt; HTTP\/1.1\nHost: target.example.com\nContent-Type: application\/x-www-form-urlencoded\n_wpnonce=&lt;valid_nonce&gt;&amp;action=update&amp;user_id=&lt;attacker_user_id&gt;&amp;role=administrator<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>The above HTTP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ameeba.com\/blog\/cve-2024-9408-server-side-request-forgery-attack-in-eclipse-glassfish\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"77315\">request simulates an attacker<\/a> with Subscriber-level access attempting to change their role to &#8216;administrator. This is done by sending a POST request to the &#8216;user-edit.php&#8217; endpoint with the attacker&#8217;s &#8216;user_id&#8217; and the desired &#8216;role&#8217; in the request body. Please note that this is a simplified example and an actual attack would require additional steps, such as obtaining a valid nonce.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommended Mitigation Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To mitigate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ameeba.com\/blog\/cve-2025-40741-stack-based-overflow-vulnerability-in-solid-edge-se2025-leading-to-potential-system-compromise\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"75811\">potential impact of this vulnerability<\/a>, it is strongly recommended to apply the vendor patch as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can be used as temporary mitigation.
