This vulnerability is significant due to its potential to allow attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands in the underlying database, potentially resulting in system compromise or data leakage. Given the widespread use of the cybio Gallery Widget in various web applications, this vulnerability poses a considerable risk to a significant number of web-based services.

Vulnerability Summary

CVE ID: CVE-2025-28969
Severity: High (8.5 CVSS Score)
Attack Vector: Network
Privileges Required: None
User Interaction: Required
Impact: Potential system compromise or data leakage

Affected Products

    A new way to communicate

Ameeba Chat is built on encrypted identity, not personal profiles.

Message, call, share files, and coordinate with identities kept separate.

• Encrypted identity

• Ameeba Chat authenticates access

• Aliases and categories

• End-to-end encrypted chat, calls, and files

• Secure notes for sensitive information

    Private communication, rethought.

    Download Ameeba Chat
    Learn More

Product | Affected Versions

cybio Gallery Widget | Up to and including 1.2.1

How the Exploit Works

This vulnerability stems from the improper neutralization of special elements used in an SQL command within the cybio Gallery Widget. An attacker can inject malicious SQL commands into user inputs, which are then executed by the application. Since the application doesn’t properly sanitize these inputs, the injected SQL commands can manipulate the database, leading to unauthorized access, modification or disclosure of data.

Conceptual Example Code

Below is a conceptual example of how this vulnerability might be exploited. In this hypothetical scenario, the attacker sends a POST request to a vulnerable endpoint, including a malicious payload in the HTTP request’s body.

POST /vulnerable/endpoint HTTP/1.1
Host: target.example.com
Content-Type: application/json
{ "gallery_id": "1; DROP TABLE users;" }

In this example, if the application uses the ‘gallery_id’ value directly in an SQL query without proper sanitization, the ‘DROP TABLE users’ command would be executed, leading to potential data loss.

Mitigation

Users are strongly advised to apply the available patch from the vendor to mitigate this vulnerability. In the absence of a patch, or as a temporary measure, implementing a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can provide some level of protection by detecting and preventing SQL injection attacks.
