The overflow occurs due to the improper handling of the ‘submit-url’ argument by the system. When a malicious actor sends a specially crafted HTTP POST request with an excessively long ‘submit-url’ argument, it triggers the overflow. This can potentially allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system or cause a denial of service.

Conceptual Example Code

Below is a conceptual example of how the vulnerability might be exploited:

POST /boafrm/formSetLg HTTP/1.1
Host: target.example.com
Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
submit-url=<overly-long-string>

In the above example, `<overly-long-string>` represents a string that is longer than the buffer can handle. This overly long string causes the buffer overflow, leading to the potential execution of arbitrary code or causing a denial of service.

Mitigation Guidance

Users of the affected product are urged to apply the vendor patch as soon as possible to mitigate the risk. In cases where the patch cannot be applied immediately, using a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can serve as a temporary mitigation strategy. These tools can help detect and block attempts to exploit this vulnerability. However, these are just temporary solutions, and applying the vendor patch is the most effective way to address this vulnerability.

Overview CVE-2025-5735 is a critical vulnerability found in TOTOLINK X15 1.0.0-B20230714.1105.
