When a blob structure is modified by user-space after kernel verification, it can corrupt the memory, leading to undefined behavior in the system. An attacker with local access could exploit this vulnerability to either compromise the system or leak data. The attack requires user interaction to modify the blob structure after kernel verification, allowing malicious modifications to pass through unnoticed.

Conceptual Example Code

Here’s a conceptual example of how the vulnerability might be exploited in a shell command:

echo "exploit_code" > /proc/sys/kernel/blob_structure

In this example, “exploit_code” is the malicious code that manipulates the blob structure after kernel verification. It is written into the blob_structure file located in the proc/sys/kernel directory.

Mitigation Guidance

To mitigate this vulnerability, the best course of action is to apply the patches provided by the vendor. For Ubuntu, updates are available for versions 18.04 LTS and 20.04 LTS.
In scenarios where updates cannot be immediately applied, using a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can serve as temporary mitigation.
