By manipulating the ‘getuid’ argument, an attacker can cause a buffer overflow condition. This could potentially allow remote code execution or even system compromise. No user interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability, and the attack can be launched remotely over the internet.

Conceptual Example Code

Below is a conceptual example of how the vulnerability might be exploited. Please note this is a hypothetical example for educational purposes only.

POST /goform/UserCongratulationsExec HTTP/1.1
Host: target.example.com
Content-Type: application/json
{ "getuid": "A"*5000 }

In this example, the attacker sends a specially crafted HTTP POST request to the /goform/UserCongratulationsExec endpoint on the target router. The ‘getuid’ argument is overloaded with a large amount of data (represented by ‘A’*5000), causing a buffer overflow.

Mitigation

The immediate mitigation for this vulnerability is to apply the vendor-provided patch. If the patch cannot be applied immediately, it is recommended to use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or Intrusion Detection System (IDS) as a temporary mitigation measure. It’s also important to regularly update and patch your systems to protect against such vulnerabilities in the future.
